1. a member of an American political party, prominent in the 1850's, which wanted to keep control of the government in the hands of native-born citizens. It was originally a secret society whose members pretended to know nothing about it. The Know-Nothings opposed the election of new immigrants and Catholics to political position.
2. the party itself.
3. a member of an earlier native American party, with similar principles.
